In the fall of 1993, I spent several months backpacking through Europe, living in youth hostels. I was in my final semester of getting my Master's Degree in International Journalism from Baylor University, and spent much of the trip filing stories as a stringer for publications back in Texas.
The experience took me as far north as the Arctic Circle in Bodo, Norway, to the southern tip of Greece, to the eastern edge of the Czech Republic, and along the way I visited more than 20 countries in between. It was the experience, and the education, of a lifetime and the memories and knowledge remain vivid and poignant for me today.
During my months there, I spent a ton of time riding on trains, and much of that time was spent journaling or writing articles, usually while listening to one of three cassette tapes I brought with me.
One of them, "Ten Summoner's Tales", by former Police frontman, Sting, is the source of this week's song. The album produced a number of great tunes, including two major hits -- "Fields of Gold" (a toss-up for inclusion today and one of his most beautiful songs) and "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," which I chose for this week's entry.
The album title, "Ten Summoner's Tales", is a play on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, as well as on Sting's real last name (Sumner). Enjoy the video, and get your weekend started on a good note. Lyrics, as always, are below the video.
You could say I lost my faith in science and progress
You could say I lost my belief in the holy church
You could say I lost my sense of direction
You could say all of this and worse but
If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do
Some would say I was a lost man in a lost world
You could say I lost my faith in the people on TV
You could say I'd lost my belief in our politicians
They all seemed like game show hosts to me
If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do
I could be lost inside their lies without a trace
But every time I close my eyes I see your face
I never saw no miracle of science
That didn't go from a blessing to a curse
I never saw no military solution
That didn't always end up as something worse but
Let me say this first
If I ever lose my faith in you
There'd be nothing left for me to do
