"Culture" makes summer debut aboard ferries

In an effort to bring "culture and beauty" into the glum lives of the regulars who traverse the Puget Sound daily aboard its boats, the Washington State Ferry System on Tuesday announced a new onboard performance series by local amateur interpretive dancer Jeffrey Lemke, 29, of Issaquah.

The series, dubbed "Ferry Man-dango", includes six summertime dates aboard three different ferry runs featuring Lemke's renditions of classic show-tune medleys, including standards from "Oklahoma", "Miss Saigon" and "Avenue Q."

Clad in black lycra-spandex knickers, onyx knee-high tube socks, t-shirt and miniature denim vest, Lemke made his debut on Tuesday afternoon aboard the ferry Hyak, welcoming the audience with a snappy rendition of "A Few of My Favorite Things".

"Jeffrey brings a sassy brand of dance moves to his performances, the likes of which most ferry riders only dream of ever seeing in person," explained Ferry System spokeswoman Valerie Hammerman. "We're thrilled to be able to bring this kind of quality entertainment to a population that normally considers 'quality entertainment' to be spending two hours watching the Disney film they're showing in the Wal-Mart electronics section."

Ferry Tales will continue to follow the Ferry Man-Dango series throughout the summer.
