Tragedy struck for a Seattle man aboard the 6:20 a.m. Bremerton-to-Seattle ferry on Tuesday morning, when Clare Fitzhugh, 48, of Capitol Hill was bludgeoned into a state of unconsciousness by a group of engraged BFFs who police said were angry over Fitzhugh's impromtu harp concert aboard the boat.
According to eyewitness Penelope Bumiller, Fitzhugh seated himself in a booth near the rear of the boat, neatly stacked several dozen CDs of himself playing with the Bellevue Philharmonic on the floor, and began to play a stirring rendition of "Softly as in a morning sunrise" by Romberg. Within minutes, BFFs began lobbing requests at Fitzhugh, including "I got mine" by Motorhead, Iron Butterfly's "Evil Temptation", and a recurring request for "Crazy on You" by Heart. Soon the requests turned into boo's.
"He seemed confused and tried to keep playin'," explained Bumiller. "Then he switched to some John Denver love songs but that made things even more bad. We don't take kindly to uppity music. Somebody lobbed a bike helmet at him and then all hell broke loose."
According to police reports, furious passengers began hurling an array of items at Fitzhugh including "backpacks, a bicycle, tupperware of chicken salad, coffee mugs, a ratchet set, cauldron of chowder (ship's galley) a terrier and his own CDs."
"Before long he was just laying there like he was taking a nap or somethin'," Bumiller said. "He was peaceful and stayed that way until we got to Seattle."
Fitzhugh was rushed to Swedish Medical Center where he is resting comfortably, according to hospital spokesman Sean O'Regan. The police are considering the boat a crime scene and will interview an array of suspects, many of whom are already asking for their impromptu weapons back, on this afternoon's crossing.
